In this villa project, we tried to bring the ideas of simplicity, transparency, and clear structure from Mies van der Rohe’s Glass House into a new place. The site is on a steep slope in a cold mountain area close to the sea. Instead of changing the land, we decided to lift the house above the ground with a simple steel structure. This choice helped us keep the nature intact and made the house look light, as if it is floating above the landscape.
In this design, the structure is not only a support; it also creates the architecture. The steel frame and the glass walls together make a clean and honest design. Because the climate is cold, the glass walls are adapted to the weather. We used double-glazed panels, and the air between the two layers works as insulation to keep the inside warm.
All four sides of the house, and even the roof, are made of glass. This gives direct views of the mountains, the sea, and the sky, and makes the border between inside and outside very soft. The house has two levels: the lower level is a workspace for a home office, and the upper level contains the private living spaces such as the bedroom, kitchen, and bathroom.
In the end, this project became a study of three main ideas: simplicity, structure as architecture, and a close connection to nature. The result is a light and calm house that creates a strong relationship between people, the structure, and the landscape.
